This is based on a painting of the same name by Ashcan School painter Everett Shinn (1906)

She waited for him-

(she knew she’d always wait for him)

even when she shouldn’t engage

all the lights having gone down

the players now up on the stage

the story acted out on her heart

easily read for all audiences smart

wearing no frilly frocks of french lace

or the make up of a greasepaint face

nor the colors of pastel painted scenes

no- hers was the click of locked doors

and caught moments of time in-between

but kissed deep for passion’s alight

on the wings of white doves in the night

where no time can ever be spent

talking of some true love that’s heaven sent

when hearing the rustle of skirts in the hall

alas- scorched lips part for propriety’s call

but for these quick seconds of desire

that remain chained up like a rabid dog

she dares to touch upon a raging fire

destined to leave innocent ladies agog

with that one man- the one not seen

remaining just outside of the frame

who says he has nothing to give

but whom she says she will love

 just the same

I read this and I pretend you care about me. Sweet. You know the rest and you know how good you are with words so mine mean nothing...

Love and hugs,

very creative with beautiful images painted on my mind. I really like the way you changed the rhyme scheme in the last stanza. I always wanted to do that but was afraid. You did it so effectively.

Wonderfully imagined scene of a time when sex was so repressed that it became imagined romance.

Michelle

You pull more words out of a picture
Than there are stars in the sky at night
Exit, stage right.

I guess I am lucky to be the first to read and review this as I am up so late...and it is a special treat. Being the first to read someones work is indeed a treasure for it is like making love to a virgin bride...so very beautiful. This write with all it's fabulous imaages and undercurrents of emotions and desires is one of your best Michelle. So much is left said but unheard just yearning words of love and a desire for committment that can never be. Very well done my young lady friend.

hugs
