Based on a painting of the same name by Peter Andreev, oil on canvas, 1961

study the studied

propped up against the wall

he ran to get an opinion

from the neighbor down the hall

are there any words

for what's off within the lines?

he ponders it a moment

as his model then reclines

on the edge of his wobbly stool

fixated on reds and blues

his neighbor looks on excited

by the figures and the hues

many paintings are complete

yet he dreams that with one more

the critics then will notice him

and his fame they shall restore

dirt floors and unclean walls

and even Zeus' head of stone

can see the simple brilliance

of this one small work alone

all three in contemplation

of these gifts from common hands

in the crumbling artist's studio

where time hears no demands

Once lived with the 21st century Paul Revere, Michael Jerry, circa 1964-65. His studio was a wonder to behold. The sculptor would be proud.

"...where time hears no demands." What all artists feel when totally consumed by their work. A pure experience which knows no limits. Fine write!

I reaqlly liked this...been on both sides of the equation...one as a model in college art, and second, behind the canvas...it is all sureal and sometimes it seems that your best is never enough...this was a really great piece.

...as we focus on that portrait, painting or writing (etc)..we become a part of it as we create...where all around us could crumble without a notice....fabulous poem!

Michelle,
The traditional four-line stanza is right and works very well here, but apart from the structure the atmosphere is absolutely spot on, the challenges and hopes made manifest; anyone attempting to create relates to this and knows the feelings. Very fine indeed.

A lonely, often painful, sometimes unrewarding atmosphere,
the artist's studio, be it with brush or pen. I think you
captured it perfectly, Michelle. -gene.

A fine study of an artist in his private space, the studio. I especially like the last 2 lines. Yes time seems to evaporate when lost in the right hemisphere of the artist's brain. Been there often and don't appreciate being pulled out of it sometimes. Well penned. Sincerely, J'nia

I love the way you unfolded this one and I think we as poets and writers often feel We hope that one more story, one more poem, or one more book will miracuaslly propel us into fame and glory or at the very least appreciation of our talent. Sadly all too often the real artists who write suchh brilliant works (such as your exquisite art poems, are lost in the shadows..hope your sun always shines.
