Poem Artwork

The Great Spirit kept watch from above

As his children were gathered from their homes

Taken prisoner by an foreign invader

Made to walk the Trail of Tears hundreds of miles

Taken from their homes and lands

In the early winter

When cold and snow lay all around

The Great Spirit watched disguised as eagle, hawk, and owl

Many of his children were taken

To the Happy Hunting Ground

The stronger ones mourned their loss

The Trail of Tears became a river

And so that his children would never forget

The Great Spirit gathered all of the tears

Created lakes, ponds, streams, and rivers

Made the new land rich in water

Oklahoma, new land of the Great Spirit’s children,

Apache, Arapahoe, Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Comanche, Creek,

Biloxi, Okmulgee, Pawnee, Seminole, Shawnee, Wyandotte,

And many more tribes of America

As you drive across Oklahoma

The amount of water is staggering

The Trail of Tears made as lakes, rivers, ponds, and streams

Created for his children by the Great Spirit.

A good poem on something that's been on my mind lately after re-watching the video "I Will Fight No More Forever" and working on my "Native American Symphony" - your knowledge of the tribes names, and history in this is well done - having not been to OK, I never thought of it as a land of waters and rivers - they do get the spring rains.... enjoyed this

Yes, there is some beautiful country in Oklahoma. Used to live in Bartlesville a long time ago and loved to visit with many of the tribes there. They have some very colorful celebrations and a wonderful museum. You have done much justice here for the suffering of many....

Be always safe,

Karen

A shame and blight on this country what happened to our tribes. A beautiful and poignant tribute Annie.

You Look FatCalgary by RickthePoetWarrior

Using Calgary as a backdrop the author satirizes the self-serving nature of the public as it continues to fatten itself, not only physically, but egotistically as well.
