I had a good day today.
Wheeled and dealed with frenzied energy.
Important people, important projects.
Juggling priorities and pleasing the masses can be draining.

Home at last, sit down, have a drink.
Take a moment to reflect.
The cold nose on my hand startles me,
And I look down into the eyes of the dog
Waiting expectantly by my chair.

How are you my friend?
Glad to see me?
Of course you are.
Every fiber in your body shows it.
I've lost count of the times you've greeted me.

Yesterday was not so good,
But your joy at my arrival was the same.
Did you care where I was or what I had done?
I think not.
You only cared that I was here,
And that was enough for you.

Shall I impress you with my deeds,
Or how I look or dress?
I'm sure you would listen patiently,
But a gentle scratch behind the ear would be preferred.

You sense my moods and feelings.
You see past my facade and accept me as I am.
You can love without judging,
And every day you repeat the lesson to be learned.

We humans are slow learners,
But dogs are very patient teachers.
