i've lived most of my life
in my hometown.
i haven't gotten around.
oh, i've been here
and i've been there,
but i've never been where
i wanted ta' be.
i wanted to be free.
to see
the things i haven't seen.
to be
where i hadn't been.
i wanted ta' say
along the way
" i remember then..."
not " i wished that when...".

and so someday
i'll go my away.
and everday
i'll follow the highway
to little towns in far off places.
just chasin' the open spaces.
i'll see the sights
and feel the nights
in places i've never been.
and when i'm old & gray
i'll look back and say
" i remember then..."
not sadly " i wish that when...".
