Poem Artwork

You make a philosophical proposition,
ask if you could change my mind.

With close study of chemical composition
or a biological breakdown,

you might just determine source of brain’s sedition,
prevent a mental meltdown.

Carefully, you consider this supposition,
answer noted, underlined.

You’ve written, hers is a permanent condition,
her place in life so assigned
.

I break the news: you’ve become an imposition,
say I’m well; I’ve changed my mind.

Sunday in the Park with George,
the Sondheim musical, with the line
about men being fixed and cold.

Seurat to his model;
What's the point?
You are like the Seine,
like water,
while I am fixed and cold.

Fixed and cold, the male position,
undermined by female sedition,
fantasies of togetherness.

Just look around the park
the grass dotted with couples
out for a stroll
in their Sunday best
fixed and cold.
