Now she lays her down to sleep, but sleep is unthinkable, and so she lies prostrate, arms stretched outward and raised at an awkward angle, palms up, clutching grains of dry sand watered only by rolling waves of her tears.
Her wails echo through the camp, bounded on one side by the mass graves where they have buried their dead, hemmed in on the other by the ocean where they found her boy, bloated, face up and floating near the shore, arms outstretched.
Everywhere survivors reach, grasping at empty air.
Fabulous piece, Dawn! I felt the pain wracking this woman's body and mind, felt her faith collapse, wanted to wail with her, in mourning...
I think this is spectacular in visuals and aching emotion:
"clutching grains of dry sand
watered only by
rolling waves
of her tears."
It gives me the image of tsumani's 'rolling waves' killing even after its gone. And the ending, echoes the hopeless reaching for all that was lost. Excellent, empathic poem!
Haunting and wretched, Dawn, and plays upon the heart and imagination in a compelling and tortured way... I can't even apply my mind to thinking how this living nightmare must feel - and to know that it is one hell that is shared by hundreds of thousands of our brothers and sisters worldwide. Very clever intro with the play on the old child's prayer. Makes me shudder and think... we must never forget: at the rising of the sun and at its going down, we will remember them... TY for this very visually impacting piece. Take care, Kate xx
