IHOP insomniacs meet my empty stares with mutual nonchalance. Desperate for deliverance, deliberately I stir stale coffee to beat of wannabe bands from that hapless decade that saw the birth of big hair, the death of my innocence.
Two tables down, the angst-filled cowboy taps out rhythm of remorse and cries. Across the room she laughs at nothing much, shares private joke with nobody – or with anyone at all. And I wonder aloud if this
Could be sweet synchronicity, and we three royalty who’ve lost the keys to the Kingdom of Happiness? We drown sorrows surreptitiously; drenched in worry and hot syrup we pray we might remember the way home before morning comes calling.
They say the way in is to just make it through hard times and heartache one day at a time, sunrise to sunset to sunrise. I think we might have a chance, silver spoons notwithstanding, to see things sunny side up.

I can relate to this on so many levels, Dawn... the funny thing is, there is often more reality and insight WITHIN psychiatric units that OUTSIDE of them! This is what this write reminds me of - therapy. Like Jesus says, He came for the sick not for those who consider themselves "well"! At least there ARE those of us around who know we are seriously messed up, rather than trying to play it cool, fooling no-one and living an endless lie. The borderlands are very thin between... I love this - especially that "wealth and success" are no guarantee of "holding things together"; that's a laugh! The cause of us falling apart, more like! Probably way off beam here, but is just the way I've read this tonight... tomorrow may be different - which probably just goes to prove your point: the psyche is an ever-shifting kaleidoscope... Am I mad or am I mad?! LOL Kate xx
Truly thought provoking, Dawn, and I've seem many a similar sight at a Denny's, a IHOP, and countless other 24-hour diners in the wee morning hours on my travels around the country.
