When she was a little girl and knew how much this world needed her, she would tilt her head and listen to the music drifting down, a half smile spreading slowly across her face.
She would use her ingenuity to extricate her spirit from the clingy arms of fear that squeezed too tight, and, breaking free, she would run headlong into an angry wind, singing.
They called her "wild angel" or "firefly princess." Everybody wondered why she was so naturally determined to split the skies of sadness she saw in others with a bolt of her raw energy.
Forty years and even now she has no idea why she was who she was then. Some days, when she sees darkness gathering in the mirror's frame, she stops and tries to catch a distant call to glory.

You convey a life with your words here and leave just the right amount unsaid to help the reader wonder... first and last stanzas contain my favorite images...
beautifully expressed capture of how society, culture, and the life it manufactures, can contribute to the injection of FEAR into our beings, thereby undermining that blissful embrace of divine creation we feel when young...
exquisite lament, Dawn. so very much enjoyed.
peace,
Carolyn
This is the most beautiful poem that, if I were bold enough, I would so love to appropriate for myself, Dawn. Never have I seen myself so clearly in another's writes as in this crystal-clear "flashback" and comment, as it were, about my own life. You have lifted the veil on something about me here which I have never seen for myself - and I can't quite get to grips with it tangibly - so much more than this picture your words paint so skilfully. "Thank you" just doesn't seem enough: this is a great gift to me today, and I hope that you don't mind me acknowledging that publically here. I don't mean to sound egotistical - just grateful! Bless you, and needless to say am keeping. To me, this has "For Kate" as a subtitle, and that cracks me up. I am sure many others might be able to say that it speaks to them in just that same way. You have shared your wonderful gift in a very special way today. "Touching the spot" just doesn't cover what this does for me! :)) LOL Kate xx
