In such a world
where the poor die of thirst
and drown in the cesspool
of disregard
and echoed empty promises,
do you think of bridges
and boats that float
under moonlit rainbows?
Do you think about how
you condemned to die
that hope that lived for as long
as you cared about us?
Or do you change that channel, too,
and move on with your life?

In such a world
where cameras capture chaos
and desperate mothers pleading
for some help
and the slightest human kindness,
do you think of arms extended
and a helping hand
reaching down and lifting up a friend?
Do you think about how
you pushed me down, held me
under, took all the life I knew?
Or are you shaking your head
and saying even now that you
didn’t know how to help
as the need was just too great?

The pointed questions juxtaposed with images of national tragedy, while derived from personal experience, speak to an underlying malaise in our culture, a misguided belief that it is fine to take the easy way out in relationships of all kinds, to walk away and write someone off in a way that leaves a wake of wreckage and refuse. My point of view is that physical abandonment of one another is appalling and yet another telltale sign that we do not truly love one another, collectively, as we should. When we make it easy on ourselves to abandon one another emotionally, to scar one another mentally or psychologically or to abuse or deprive one another in any way, we set the stage for widescale suffering, both personal and societal. What we can do, I believe, is simply this: love one another, seek reconciliation where possible and restore hope and trust where our actions have breached or splintered a fragile human heart or mind or spirit. Ok.... my sermon, straight from a hurting heart, is through for now. Dawn

I've been talking to several people over the past few days. The collective feeling was one of outrage like yours and a lingering
despair. But this has turned to an outpouring of people gathering
a force of goodwill in efforts to help these poor souls. People are offering their homes to the homeless. There are food and water drives. Fund-raisers. I know that as a whole we have sunk into a quagmire of consumerism and spiritual decay, but there are many
good people among us. I can't help but see that out of this tragedy we will learn the lessons of compassion and love and remember what is truly of value...

Dawn,

Spot on. I, too, agree with Eileen...what a world, what a world...excellent, powerful write with a much needed message of responsibility.

powerful message ... your did a great job of externalizing and internal state of being ...

<we must help, even though in our hearts we realize it to be futile ... at least, we can help those who survived ... give to their cause ... and i mean with money>

Dawn I agree with you! This world is sadly lacking in love. Yet it is also lacking in taking responsibility. They stopped teaching history of how this country was founded, and took god out of all equations and replaced him with the government and put in a president for a scapegoat that will get the blame for everything that ever happened, for we have become dependant upon something that can never be trusted. If you remember what god said we are to trust in him and not in man. sadly we look to the wrong one to help us for god is no longer our first port of call. It is all too sad, for we have too many human souls hurting from terrible misfortune that is made worse due to lack of understanding. A very heartfelt write that is deeply felt Dawn! Eileen
