When the firemen came
you stood in your doorway
and stared at them,
incredulous,
having tried to divert them
elsewhere, the place where
you said the true emergency was.

You wanted to be her hero.
She even asked you if you would.
Naturally, you obliged,
having had
years of practice at calling
for help for anyone but
your wreck of a self.

It is the picture of you
that flags me down, then
douses me in truth:
You, arms waving wildly,
screaming, “Emergency! 9-1-1,
Emergency!” pointing
the finger at me.

I am too exhausted
to make a stand, so I let them
carry me away. And just
like that you
disappear from my life
as my world is burning down.
You are off to help someone.

Kate,

Provocative, powerful, painful writing...with an excellent lesson.

When in doubt kick it out. Rugby we just kick it in to touch..

A harsh reminder of how we let ourselves become so needy that we take whatever they have to offer, and cry for more. Best to let that go down the drain where it belongs...Excellent write Dawn

I have to agree with Elizabeth on this one...he certainly is a turd and you should kick his sorry butt to the curb. That said, who hasn't known a (dare I call him) man like this. There are so many good men out there that you should never have to put up with his type. He lives for the rescue, and for you to trust him with your heart; once accomplished he done with you and is off to save the next damsel in distress. He has a savior complex and is incapable of following through once he has made the initial rescue. It is a sad situation and he is missing out on all the best parts of a relationship.
Take care,
Sherry

He's a turd. Dump him.
There is humor as well as pain with this one. Well done.

some men are only happy with the damsel in distress syndrom...i used to do that really well but somewhere along the line i lost the knack, finding it easier to do it myself than to put up with the fireman's carry down some theoretical ladder
