After the Accident

My eyes dart furtively,
suspicious of strange surroundings.

Liquid sadness pools.
My throat catches as I remember.

What is this world and why
am I here in a home where I
do not belong, where they
only care for me because
someone says it is
their duty?

Quickened heartbeat gathers
dreams dashed into balled fists

that pound against iron restriction
of body, place and time.

            I thrash about inside myself,
but like a frightened deer
I am transfixed, unable
to take my eyes off
the traffic that jams
my mind.

I replay the scene in an endless loop.

Oddly, I never see it coming –
shiny new vehicle that wounds me.

Neither do I imagine you the reckless
accidental tourist in my life.

            After the accident, you
find it difficult to look
full upon my injuries,
much less stay
near or sit by
my side.

You reason you were just
a passerby passing through, and you

release me back into my life, knowing
well nothing of it will remain.

To survive is to suffer, to be
always glancing backward
over my shoulder into
a mirror where I search
for shape of the woman
I was.

EXCELLENT - powerful and totally convincing, Dawn. A true "in the moment" write that, as others have said, causes the heart to pound and the throat to thicken. Life IS a succession of moments, and perspectives are very adept at "going with the flow". Here I am, pleased to be on the up from breast cancer when, a month ago, I was always berueing my ungenerous proportions to start with! Emotional issues are, perhaps, the hardest to swivel - espcially where the trauma has been great and the sense of unerdlying betrayal like a denial of self-worth. Fantastically portrayed for us here, Dawn, and, as ever, I am impressed with your experimentation with form. Be well, top poet! LOL Kate xx

Dawn this is a marvelous poem with superb metaphors that take away your breath. Daily life does hold different situations which we must be careful of lest we fall in the pitfalls. Some people complain of the circumstances surrounding their lives but the reality behind our problems could be sourcing from other origins. Thank you dawn for sharing this wonderful poem with us

You have a very good central metaphor and extended images to expand it in this poem of existential struggles.

powerful metaphor and symbolism ... circumstance is no accident, we create the reality of how we perceive of ourselves by the events we choose to experience and reflect upon the outcome of their form ... even if they appear random, they are the creation of our will ..

Wow! You never cease to amaze me. This is one of your best, but then I look at the one framed and hanging in my house. The metaphor is brilliant. As I read, I had trouble breathing. It really affected me.

In the blink of an eye everything we know can change. A new beginning, even if it is difficult, can be an opportunity if we allow ourselves to fall into it instead of trying to resist and go backwards to the way things were. We have to forget going back or dwelling in what was as being an option and work with what we have. In a way, it is like feeding a large family on a meager budget; sometimes we have the opportunity to go out and buy all the things we want to make a pot of soup and other times we must go to our cupboard and use what we have...as a rule they both turn out great and we achieve our need which is feeding our family. Life is a lot like that many times, and though there are unexpected potholes and jags in the road along our way, we must never lose sight of our focused goal and understand that it is our responsibility to make it our reality. Excellent and thought provoking write, Dawn.

Take care,

Sherry

A darkly beautiful piece...an outpouring of sorrow, a remembrance of things past that will never really be past...well described...I can feel your nervousness, imagine your insides churning as you relive what happened...how you expressed it took me on the same journey...well done, although I'm so sorry that it happened to you Dawn. Be well and blessed. Michelle
