In the Interim

After final thunderclap,
when lightning had made its mark
and fades from periwinkle sky,

Before dawn on Sunday,
when the body lies bruised, mangled,
wrapped in white linen and tears,

As faith ebbs and the blood drains
into a torrent of loss and disillusion,
I envision us, together, on the shore:

We eat breakfast, the lot of us
amazed by your presence, that light
of eternal hope alive in your eyes.

On the fulcrum of the see-saw
of what I see and what I saw comes
a moment of suspension

When all one can do is wait,
balanced on a precipice, unsure of
which way things might go.

Time only seems to stand still
living in the interim, waiting for a shift
and for your rise or fall.

All that was and will be
is now possible with surrender,
wild and weightless wonder.

Life always hangs in the balance, Dawn. The only thing that is certain is that we certainly don't know what will happen next. I suspect life would be pretty boring if we always knew what was going to happen next. I am always amazed at the way that my prayers are answered, but in a manner that I never would have suspected and usually wouldn't have asked for. Life is an amazing trip, that is for sure. Excellent writing, Dawn.
Take care,
Sherry

This poem reminds me of how hang gliders wait for the wind before running to jump off the mountain. The interim is fascinating in many sports of that kind, and your poem is breathtaking in that same way. Superb writing Dawn!

Eileen

Despair, hope, dreams, and all the feelings in between come across in vivid images of a person hanging on. Good piece of writing, Dawn.

Carmen :-)
