Sometimes I lie still,
mummified by a culture
which has no use for me,
petrified by breath of love
you have denied to me.

Sometimes I go forth,
forcing myself to believe
in second chance by chance,
wearing a straightjacket smile,
pretending I can dance.

Sometimes I hold back
or am held back by a past
which grabs me by the throat
and flings me down with such force
I’m in a dead man’s float.

Sometimes I press on,
determined to overcome,
pulled by future forward
from nothing into something
onward, upward, toward.

Today, soul gives way
and I meld into the muck
I’ve made of life, it’s made
of me. Dimmed by ticking
time sans you, I fade, fade.

there is a tremendous force of opposing energy in this poem ... there is the will to move onward and a reflective quality to reconsider its momentum ...

captivating poem, Dawn ...

The third stanza especially lends image to the psychological portrait of the past haunting the present. J.

Reminds me of laying of a causeway across a boggy mire, somehow. The stepping stones are great... but so often our attempts to stand on solid ground fall foul of quicksands that all the more suck us down. Tread lightly over the sinking bits and enjoy the view from the dry patches... looking back, you will be amazed how far you've come and how much of a stretch of straight road lies behind you! Great picture you present for us here and the emotion is superbly intense. Real Yorkshire Moors stuff! :)) LOL K xx
