You believe

there are things I would expect of you —

security, perhaps, or the happy ever after dream
that never takes a break.

You don't know yet
there are things I now fulfill for me —

freedom, above all, and the certain happiness it brings
in all the surprising, unexpected ways.

I believe

there are things you would expect of me —

to always prop you up and feed you like a king, perhaps,

and rise each day for you.

I don't know yet

there are things you will fulfill for you —

above all, the joy of greeting each new day complete

and trusting you already have all you need.

You believe
I would demand your participation in specific ways —

diamonds and dancing, lavish lovemaking and eloquent conversation
that solves all my worldly problems.

You don't know yet

how I choose now to be the full participant —

to arrive, fully present, in the moment, as all of who I am
and rejoice in God's gifts reflected in the other.

I believe

you would demand my participation in specific ways —

me ever happy, compliant, with good sex the way you want it

that dulls the pain of being fully alive.

I don't know yet

there are things you will fulfill for you —

that you will now take up full responsibility for your happiness

and meet me in a field of cocreation.

You believe

I want the dream I never had, the fairytale forever —

you in perfection, prince charming to me and all others

and the image of the happy life with its gleaming success

You don't know yet

that I want more than that and I have no taste for mirage —

no interest in the provencial or expected. My passion
is simply for your one true heart to beat in time with mine.

I believe

you want the dream you never had, the knight's adventure —
the kingdom of forever that was to you the definition fo success

and so will see me as secondary, paling in comparison.

I don't know yet

that you want more than that  and have no taste for do-overs —

no wish to pick up where you left off or patch the holes. Your passion

is simply for my one true heart to beat in time with yours.
