Coffee with the Angels

Drinking coffee with the angels,
it suddenly occurs to me and
my one-of-a-kind circus mind
to stop and see this differently.
I treasure their gracious presence
but have grown tired of still being held
morning and night by them, not you.
Still, I am in the company of angels,
awaiting long-delayed second birth
into this world before I die again.

They seem giddy today, amused
by me, all light-hearted love and laughter.
They have me look up from this perch
above the trees to see the small deer
at wood's edge, wide-eyed with wonder
at this clearing she has stumbled into.
Momentarily in awe, totally transfixed,
she is here at the hazy horizon of her
promised land, an unexpected clearing,
pristine beginning, a new world.

Tonight there will be fireworks
and I have these two loyal companions
to keep me warm and see me through
all the exploding memories of moments
of watching celebration from afar.
I am alone in all I know and grateful
for the knowing but really only wanting
to hold a human hand and feel for once
not an outsider but belonging here.
Perhaps celebration is meant

To remind me of all the freedom
I have found in spite of falls and frailty.
For my foundation is strong; my heart
has been set free in time, spinning
with a timeless love unseen by you.
And I will dance with this life's miracle.
I will be enraptured with such mystery.
The angels stop their chatter, all eyes
upon me, and then they bend to kiss me
and tell me I am ready now.
