Ravenous, you were hungry
like the wolf and failed to temper
your lust for power, dismissing
all the little stolen moments
that meant nothing.
So you told yourself. You never
saw it coming, the harmless
sheep you frolicked with
were no sheep at all,
but wolves dressed
To kill in ordinary time.
Who knew they were in collusion,
working together for your confusion,
in service to the prince of lesser things
and laughing like hyenas.
Having stabbed you in the back
and walked away, they are closing in
and you don't even see them circling,
having formed a devil's pact,
thirsty for your blood.
They lick their lips, tasting
their mutual temporary triumph,
writhing orgy-like at the tower
that is about to topple and take
you down in your game of greed.
Maybe you are preoccupied
with your tail between your legs.
Or maybe you've convinced yourself
you deserve your undoing.
I care not what they do
But I have no stomach
for seeing how you stick around
and give the illusion of the slaughter
any heed at all. Take care lest you
lose your soul as you stay
Too long at the scene of ruin,
believing still in your need or right
to prove yourself a victor or a victim,
whichever it may be today.
Turn now, turn away...
