All We Cannot Bear Alone

A birthday poem, late I know, honoring the flame you could not extinguish. Because you, too, are held within it. I have such gratitude for the Keeper of the Stars, whose we are and who still is ours. And especially for the one who was my friend in time, who bore the flame and walked through fire without losing heart until I could remember mine and make my swift return. I thank you, too, mirror mine, for all I've learned. Love and honor, always wherever we all shall go from here, Dawn

Alone

you have haunted me

through a holy land

in forested France

with letters unsent

cruel harsh words not meant

touch of your hand

and every missed chance

to begin again.

Alone

I waited for you

through endless long night

in cold empty rooms

without news of you

never knowing who

was now in your sight

or how many tombs

you buried me in.

Alone

he stood there by me

through silence and storm

in rivers of blood

without any thought

he never once sought

love in certain form

or flower from bud

and what might have been.

Alone

I loved him through time

through a glass darkly

in this purple haze

with faint flicker far

the twinkle of star

shining so starkly

through fusion of days

spent wondering when.

Alone

we lived, torn apart

holding some curtain

a truth divided

me never knowing

how love was growing

the ending certain:

love that lives again.

Alone

at home in my heart

I learned to forgive

deep waters parted

and at last I saw

could somehow recall

how we died and lived

how it all started

there was no question.

Alone

lost there in your head

can’t you see it now

how there between us

was always One Love

eternal above

and here below how

we meet, friend to friend.

Alone

he stands in the sun

tending to a fire

that kept love alive

rekindling life’s flame

and casting no blame

lifting us higher

helping us survive

all we cannot bear

alone.
