What Still There Is to Gain

inspired by the most beautiful love letter of them all, 1 Corinthians 13, and all that survives in time.

When you were a child
you talked like a child,
you thought like a child,
you reasoned like a child,

And then you became a man
and in time came face to face with
the man in the mirror, reflected too
by my cloudlike appearance.

Three things remain.
We shall see face to face
in the moment they return,
gushing forth from within

Like the river running wild
where you laughed as a child
and I first saw you, seeing I
had jumped too late. Later,

I would watch you walking through the gate
without me listening to my favorite song,
thinking it all wrong and dooming myself
to the dungeon life. But I never forgot

The better part, first when you put me
in my place calling me the clanging cymbal
but you also judged me wrong, for I had
a greater love than you dared imagine.

It delights not in evil. It rejoices
with the truth. It perserveres.
Love keeps no record
of wrong and in its pure light

All partiality fades. What comes clear
is what we knew as little children
when the spark was a flame
that could be called by no other name

Than Love. To this we may return.
And this time no man nor beast
nor man-made emperor nor charlatan
shall dare to take it from us.

Now, as then, love never fails
and there is everything to gain.
The door is open as before and
He calls to us to come as little children.
