Your faces come to me often
on the restless nights, though they blur
from the slur of syrup they
poured down our throats.
Each time they placed the tiny
glass figurines on the mantle,
I called forth a unicorn
to protect you,
But it is true even that act
did not save you and what it was
that saved me I do not know.
But unicorns
And all I had imagined as
they practiced art of tyranny
stayed close by me, beside me.
Love grew in me.
I will not turn from their darkness.
Neither will I forget your light,
sweet innocents, brave ones who
did not survive.
