Fall day I drove toward Cashel,
my heart torn as if there was
a gash in universal time,
its source then still unknown to me,

I did not understand how,
having been so joyous, free
and happy, suddenly I was
crying as if I might never

Smile again. I didn't know 
what I was doing, to drive
three hours to see the rock I 
loved—only to turn around and 

Drive back in time to care for
three dogs that were family
those years to me. I turned around
just short of destination but

Before heading back I stood
in an Irish rain, pleading
with God about something—I could
not tell you what. That day I knew

I could no more resist trip
to France I swore I'd never
make, no matter what. The moment
I decided the sun broke through.

Somehow I returned to self
although never quite the same, 
for I knew then it was all so
much larger than life, that my heart

Was caught again in whirlwind
that would one way or other
restore me to my rightful place
wherever such a place might be.
