The O-N-L-Y way is to get "OFF" gas! NO MORE FOSSIL FUELS! Even though we reduce demand, China and some others have (and WILL CONTINUE) to suck down all the remaining fossil fuels and that will drive prices up EVEN FURTHER (and fossil fuels are exhaustible - they WILL BE USED UP - there's only so much oil in the earth - once gone, it is GONE (for good!) Look into bio-deisel, and there is even an "compressed air car" - for real! 250 miles per tank - it's not super-quiet, but there's ZERO POLLUTION, ZERO FOSSIL FUEL and all you have to do fill it up is... This compressed air concept also can be used for motor-scooters and so forth.

Government DOES NOT CARE - oil industry is TOO EMBEDDED in this economy; so it is up to US (you and I) to FORCE them to change! Also, used hybrids and flex-fuel vehicles. Government WAS (AND IS) too shortsighted! They SHOULD HAVE seen this a LONG time ago, and should have made the needed changes - more soy, corn, ethanol, bio-diesel, solar, hyrbids, air cars, hyrdrogen & fuel cells, etc. [end soapbox]

Larry, nice write...I agree, blaming the local dealer is wrong...it's the arrogance of the big oil companies hell bent on huge profits and a very lame brained congress which refuses to do anything at all. Yesterday, gas at one of our three gas stations was $4.19 gallon...just like every other place in the country. I've come to the conclusion the only thing we can do is to stop driving...period. I know that is not the total answer but it has to start somewhere.

I agree with Mr. Ed, it is shameful to give them such big tax breaks when they are breaking us. I enjoyed your poem, I think I carry a boulder in my head, just waiting on the opportunity to throw it.

I recently watched our so called 'leaders' drag several oil company execs to a Congressional hearing. They received $126 billion in profits last year, and our so called 'leaders' give them $18 billion a year in tax subsidies.

"Shameful!" cried our so called very concerned leaders, and they will do nothing about it at all, and when gas soon reaches $5.00 a gallon, I'm sure they'll once again drag them in for a T.V. sound byte, and yell, "Shameful!" once more.
