Some gather in worship weekly
for the preacher to make them feel good
while they ignore demanding themes
from pages of God’s Holy Word.
They sing songs with a rock beat
and move with a rhythm of bliss
while greeting those on either side
with what Paul called a holy kiss.
Others gather with pipe organs
singing the old classical hymns.
They share the Book of Common Prayer
while the candles glow very dim.
It feels good when the sermon
points out the sins of the other guys
while you tell yourself you’re better
and your self-esteem starts to rise.
But you know there’s another kind
of feel good religion today.
It leads to boisterous singing
and a great depth when you pray.
It comes as we center outward
and help out a neighbor in need
nurturing a generous heart
while emptying it of all greed.
It’s a feeling that’s not fleeting
and not artificially fed.
It keeps one’s faith ver vital
and helps us do what Jesus said.
