Distracted By His Cell

I was on the interstate and an inattentive driver on his cell phone came into my lane.

 

 
 
He swerved into my lane
I slowed and gave him space
I might have said some bad words
About not being in a race.
 
As I moved up beside him
I saw him on his phone
The car seat behind him
Told me he was not alone.
 
That increased my anger
More than a notch or two
He put his life in danger
But his small child’s life too.
 
I glared at him intensely
though he didn’t look my way
If I could get his attention
I’d have a lot to say.
 
I don’t think he was texting
But his eyes weren’t on the road
The responsibility for that child
Should have been a heavy load.
 
When I turned off at the ramp
I saw he was still there
And the only thing I could do
Was to say an extra prayer.

People seem to be so insecure about their place in the herd that they have this desperaste need to stay connected. Unfortunately that insecurity has its cost, sometimes even csting peoples'lives. I'd say there ought to be a law, but there are too many of them already, and the ones that do the most good are often ignored.

I so relate, Larry. Driving on Southern Calif freeways (my neck of the woods) anymore is like being in a competitive zoo. Praying is certainly the key. I agree with thee most assuredly. good one ... r

i don't know what's so important, people can't wait to get off the road to text or call ... it's illegal in NY but i see it all the time ...

Larry, in the state of Oregon it is illegal to talk on your cell phone while driving (unless you have one of those hands free devices) What you could have done is dialed 911, reporting the drivers erratic driving with a small child in the car. Nice write.

Nice one Larry. I too have received calls while I was driving, but I no longer answer them because,,,, no matter how hard you try, you cannot help but become distracted. When you are piloting several thousand pounds of killing machine, distracted is the last thing you need to be. Thanks for the reminder. Dick
