This Place is a HOME

By Kathy Armijo

A foundation,
Four walls,
A roof,
A house or a home?

I’ve been in many a beautiful house
To die for furnishings,
The latest electronic gadgets,
Roaring fire in the fireplace
Yet, unable to keep out the cold.

The house looks like a museum
Except you don’t pay to get in.
Afraid to touch a thing
Cause breaking it you can’t afford.
Remembering the sign in the store
You touch it, you break it, you bought it.  Ouch!

That loving place called home
Is really quite different.
The furniture may be worn,
But the place feels warm
Even without a fire in the fireplace
            Or, the heater being on.

Take your shoes off.
Stay a spell.
You’re not company
You’re one of the family.

Want another soda?
You know where the fridge is.
Make yourself at home.

Kids run through the door,
Not all of them yours.
A water gun fight?
In the dining room?
Shucks, it’s only water,
What the heck!
Let’s join in and
Show them how the big kids play.

A home is a place where love abounds.
It knows sounds of laughter and tears.
It knows fears.
It knows joyousness.

It’s the port that provides shelter from life’s storms.
Mom’s café is always open.
Dad can repair your car or knows who can.
There’s always an open box of Kleenex,
     Ready for that heart-felt share.
You consider yourself lucky
To have a loving caring home.

A floor:
To lie on, to share your dreams, watch TV, or
To color or wrestle with the grandkids.
Many walls:
On which to hang the kiddo’s pictures
     And their art.
A roof:
To provide protection for your loved ones.

Now, THIS
Is a HOME!

I like a lived in look home myself and so did deceased hubby Tom. We lived as we wished to and anyone who did not like it did not have to come visit us. It wasn't dirty, just lived in Tom always said. A cozy place too with things we both adored and collected.

I loved this one, if you look into my older poems, you will find one I wrote called Drowning the Devil with a Garden Hose, this reminded me of that

"Kids run through the door, Not all of them yours."
Heck, half the time I never even knew whose kid was sleeping on the couch.
Come on over but look out for that loose porch plank.

Give me a home where the rug rats can roam, where caring and love are both free. Great pen Kathy; you've spoken pure truth here. God bless.

Fantastic Kathy and it is nice to see there are others who know the difference between a house and a home. Me, I prefer a home anytime. For a minute there I thought you were describing my home, warn furniture, pictures all over the walls, take off your shoes and stay a spell, hungry there's the frige..... Just loved it....

Be safe,
Karen

Now this is the truth...I too have visited friends homes such as you describe and the visit was with fear I would mess something up or stray from the runner across the carpet somehow...you did this well.

A home is a place where love abounds.

It truly is, no matter where, or how humble or grand, it may be.

Kathy this is so close to home it isn't funny, My mom would always say peel another potato to throw in the pot just in case and the water fights would last up to eight hours. We may not have had lots of money but we always had a home. Great write. Thank you for the memories.

You know Kathy...this poem truly touched me. As I read it I looked around my surroundings and realized I have all of that and more...and no matter how rough the outside world can get I am blessed to live in such a place. Thanks for the gentle reminder.
