Sitting by the Stream

By Kathy Armijo

Three little boys sitting by the stream

Dreaming dreams only boys can dream.

Mom and Dad call it mischief.

What will we do with the frog we caught?

Let’s just hope Mom doesn’t learn that

We’re gonna’ drop it in the neighbor’s flowerpot.

Should we tell Dad?

He won’t think what we’re doing is bad.

And, I’m sure he’ll have better ideas for the frog.

Shall we try to skip a rock across the stream?

Hee.  Hee.  It always makes Mom and Dad scream.

You want to play tag?

Nope!

Are you a dope?

Dad will curse in Spanish.

Too much noise to catch some fish.

Wanna’ play some crazy eights?

And, so begins the great debate.

What to do?

Mom reminds us school will soon start.

For this, we have no heart.

We’d rather play,

Than be in school all day.

So, the boys sit by the stream

Dreaming dreams only little boys can dream.

Reminiscing about the fun they had this summer.

And, wishing it would last a whole lot longer.

I love this. It reminds me of when I was a kid and kids actually played like this. Now they stay inside and play on the X-box and watch T.V. It's sad huh? I was a tom-boy and loved to fish and skip rocks (still do) :) *hugs* Jean

a gentle yet strong journey through the eyes of youth. the particular male voice, young vibrance of what joy the everyday can be and the simple mischief of old, that which does not destroy but is just what we call "being a boy." delightful -

much peace,

Kathy, I find that your poem 'Sitting by the Stream' creates a very vivid mental image, that brings back childhood memories in us all.

"Reminiscing about the fun they had this summer. And, wishing it would last a whole lot longer."

As a mom, I find that this poem brings back fond memories of raising a truly wonderful son!
