Inspired when someone asked the question "what do you call a Mom when her children have died?"

This is dedicated to you, Charlie.

Ex or Former Mom?
By Kathy Armijo

What do you call a Mom
When her children have all died?
Is she an ex or former Mom?

No, she’s still a Mom.

In her own right though, she’s an orphan.
Left without a legacy,
The world mourns her tragedy.

Yet, she knows love.
She has known loss,
And trust that her children, she’ll meet again.

She is confident that they are in God’s heaven,
Filled with joy in seeing their brethren.
Such ecstasy!

This is God’s promise –
Follow His word.
And receive His bliss-filled reward.

Strive to follow His word, she does
Looking forward to the day when she sees
Her children
And they live together
Eternally in God’s heaven.

In mine and God’s eye

I’m still a Mom!

This poem reminds me of the message in William Wordsworth's poem (and one of my all-time favorites), "We are Seven".

For me, sometimes it is hard to judge whether to state the obvious of how many children I have, or to take the time to explain that I have more children than meets the eye and also risk having my hallowed motherhood to my deceased son questioned...

P.S. I also have to say I love that this is dedicated to my sis... :~)

(((((Kathy)))))

You're a Mom. A loving, compassionate one whose arms are empty, whose mind is full of memories, both good and bad. A powerful answer to questions well meaning (I'd hope) people ask. Well done.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla. *tears* You've touched me deeply with this--

When you lose a child, and you seek God's embrace to sooth you, your soul enlarges--now schooled by the wracking pain of loss, you go with your arms out-stretched into the world, seeking all His children to comfort--to aid--to love. Your milk of kindness pours from your beating breast and floods the auras around you. You read the papers and see another young mother has left her baby in the dumpster, and the milk flows on -- you understand the beauty of life -- the waste of humanity -- the driftwood some mothers are -- drifting around without purpose -- when all your purpose is dead, you find purpose in every being you see...And so it goes. We feed each other. And you have spread a sea of warmth on us. God Bless You, Kathy. Referencing comments from "The Night I Said, Goodbye"--a beautiful poem. --Charlie

Kathy, my heart cries out for you. You have expressed yourself as a mother in many ways in the poetry you've written. Having experienced the miracle of having a child/ren, knowing the joy and love of a little one pressed to your chest, tending and feeding and caring for them, you could never be anything else but a mom. You are a mom, and if your little children's spirits are anywhere near, they know you are a mom--their mom. You will always be a mom in your heart with the love you still have for them.

In Arabic there is a proverb that says:
"Those who walk on embers feel the burning".
And those who lost children are real moms at a multiple power. Mine lost two.

A wonderful writing...the last line a shock, since I had not read your previous poem "A Blessing from Above" and had to go look it up to read. You are indeed still your child's Mom, experiencing the full range of parenting, including the heart-wrenching loss.
Deitrich Boenhofer wrote that there will always be a place that can only be filled when reunion with our loved one comes.
Irreplaceable love, but still very real.
God bless you, and comfort you with the comfort that only He can provide.
Know that He is using you and all you have endured to bless others.

Love,
Connie
