from the red rock canyons to the upper plateaus past the virgin river through the southwestern forests and across the badlands beyond he’s driving a truck in the pacific northwest feeding the cats and taking photographs meanwhile in colorado, i water his plants out the window the flatirons loom the air is thick and blowing warm i walk through his library and enjoy the books finding the perspective of another look the art on the walls the dishes unused an electric piano and instrumental music he loves the plateau and desert wilderness topographic maps and geologic books rolls of film and slides galore all aglow of the desert’s color i think he’s a dreamer and shifts between worlds withdrawn from the common and makes his own rules i’m playing his Vangelis sitting in his chair reading Castaneda without a worry or a care
wonder what he’s thinking in the land of the ferns hiking within the tall evergreens where waters abundant in rivers and streams and moss grows easily upon the trees
I got a jolt!!! that picture took me back to the Victoria mountain range in Australia. The plateau in question there was called by some Maori the "sleeping Serpent" more or less, they are weird name over there (or should I say Under there?)
You poem really took me there...thanks.
Georg
love this, Debby! the detail of both settings and the emotional and thought processes illuminate the whole thing and opens the reader up to the human experience. Dawn
Breathtaking photograph! Your poem and photograph compliment each other very nicely. However to be sitting and waiting for another to return can be difficult at times. All will be brushed aside upon the return. Great write....
Ahhh to sit in the chair, in the home, in the shadow of someone we love or admire is often like sipping on a heady wine, as each new item opens up we get just a little bit tipsier on knowing the person from his surroundings.
Have to agree with Karen below, this is both intimate and far-flung in its atmosphere, giving the impression of lingering, intimate thoughts and closeness of the two persons involved... A kind of "wish you were here" desire to share in both worlds at once. The beauty of your visuals linger, Debbie. You conjure The Big Country and the curled-up cat scenario very well. Wonderful details. TY Kate xx
