Poem Artwork

are you awake?  not relative
to asleep, but aware such as when you
look around with an outside perspective
and observe your life and experience
she sighed…oh please….are you kidding
who has time to look at anything
my life is a blurr, rushing from home
to work, the kids, friends, and oh ya…
it’s soon Christmas…how can that already be here
his parents are coming and
all I can feel is there is not enough time
to do anything…who cares about awake/aware
I’ve got a zillion things on my mind
and I think I’m getting a winter cold
all I want to do is take a hot bath and sleep
for the rest of the year…ya that’s it
don’t wake me until next year…
she sighed again…not very realistic is it

smiling…I gave her a hug
a long compassionate hug, and in my mind
a bright star-shaped light appeared
I imagined it melding into her heart
and just held it and her a bit longer
we slowly released our embrace and
she took a deep breath and asked…what were we
talking about?

I believe you were describing your life
and your body’s rebellious response to
its experience…it is asking you to rest
and with that she was off again complaining
and defending her illusion of herself and her life
my eyes sent her understanding and appreciation
my heart felt humbled by her physical exhaustion
I wished her a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
knowing I saw something she didn’t, at least not yet
beneath/beyond that façade of her human body was
an amazing, perfect, fabulous spirit
filled of creative gifts, love, and vitality
it’s easy to forget those things about yourself
when you become your illusion rather than
see reality from the perspective outside of its
daily illusion…

take baby steps, and notice what you are experiencing
and then notice yourself and ask yourself, who are you, when
you are not being who you think you are

Hi Debby, Thank God we are not the only ones. Get up in the morning, work until late night, then cooking for the next day. The phone ringing: "Dad or mom can you pick-up the kids from school?" "Of course, my son". We rush seventy miles, you know the rest, we are back home, it is early in the morning. I love this melody exausted as we are, we are happy to be able to do something positive and be part of the old and of the young generation. The work is waiting for us at home. A short breakfast and the day starts again. Thank God we are alive. Thank you for expressing life as it is. Congratulations. Bless you Emile

i'm in a constant battle with my self's illusion ... it's in the fleeting moments of peace i find truth ... truth being unbridled perspective ... those moments have an enduring effect ...

i do love this! i am reminded of a line in a movie that spoke of the fact that most people are not truly "Awake" but those who are live in a state of constant amazement

"take baby steps, and notice what you are experiencing

That's quite a tall order for some, but it one that can make a difference for the better if we take the time to do it. Great write Debby!
