Ever thing of what could have happened?

Mingling throughout the crowded place
I saw someone, a familiar face.  I knew
It so very well, yet where had I seen
him, no way to tell.

My heart skipped a beat as my memory

returned.  A boy, now a man, someone

From long ago.  A secret love I had for him,

But my passion wouldn’t speak.   For I knew

He’d just laugh at me, I wasn’t in his league.

Though my love for him was strong,

I’d never let it show.  For the sweet thought of

Being held in his arms

Was a pleasure I would never know.

My mind stopped the childish nonsense, and

came back to today.  He was walking towards

me; what was I to say?  Did you know I loved

you when we were young, when you never

looked my way?  No, that was my secret, and

the feelings of yesterday.

He looked into my eyes, and I into his.  We then

Looked away, talked small things, and times

Way back when.  He asked me why had we never

been friends.  He cared for me deeply, why did

I never talk to him?

I opened my mouth to respond, and at a crucial time

My husband tapped me on the shoulder, said with a smile,

“Hey, bud, you trying to steal my wife?”

His wife came up to him, and gave me a strange look,

With anger in her voice, “Let’s get out of here Bryce.”

We both glanced at each other, and thought of

The love we’d missed, but because of pride,

Never even had a first kiss.

Would we have been happy together?  Now an unknown,

Then again, perhaps love never would have grown.

Doesn’t matter now, we were kids, time to get over it.

But one always has to wonder where memories sit, ponder

The question:  WHAT IF?

the old what if revisited with, memories of a past loved -- isn't it absolutely romantic to dream and contemplate what might have been, or not been? -- especially where an affair the heart is involved -- well written my friend -- peace and love -- Jon Michael

If there is a rebirth, in somewhere one can re-encounter a lost love. Could that be it? Is it that? -- "What If?"

This is the magic of time ringing the bells of eternity... "What If?"... Only time can tell.

Thank you for this poetic sublime bouquet that perfumes the realms of the soul.

In appreciation,

Dixie Dawn Michelle

Ah, it seems an eternal question, too. I can remember things that I was to naieve to notice when I was young. What if....

You've captured a scene many have experienced -- if not for a "first love" or unrequited love. Everyone has their own "what if's" -- what if I took that job --- What if I moved to Alaska ---- What if... What if....What if.... you fill in the blank.
Best to enjoy the few minutes of wondering ... and then put it out of your mind. Remember the good parts of the path you chose to follow .... and remember everything else is only part of your imagination ....something you will never know about for sure. I loved your poem! Susan

I think you captured well the what if scenario that we all go through at least once inour life, sometimes a lot more. Fate is fickle but imagination lets us walk back in time if we so choose.

"What If" opens up many roadways to possibilities, but I imagine the husband you have was the one meant for you. Your poem makes me think of the saying, "Two people passing on the road of life."

If (there's that word popping up already) we have managed to find peace and contentment and love in our lives that incident would never happen. Oh, you might see him and suddenly desire him, but it would pass quickly. However, we are not all fortunate to find peace and contentment and love, so you bet, the "what if's" loom large within us. I know I have them, and I will carry my "what if's" to my grave (metaphorically speaking I will be cremated).
