Another Father’s Day is passing us by
A bitter sweet day for our Dads that have died
Let us not think of their death, think of
the things we’ll never forget.
When I was a child I was proud making
Daddy breakfast in bed. Burnt toast,
orange juice with seeds, coffee so
strong it could buckle one’s knees
But for Dad the breakfast was that of a chef
As he praised that mess again and again.
For a father’s day present, the ugliest tie,
He raved and raved about his beautiful present
Although I knew it was a little white lie.
When I was older I sometimes asked for a little change
He always rattled his pockets, I finally asked him why.
“It’s nothing honey, nothing at all, I was saying to my money
a fond good-bye “
When I was lonely, he played chess with me, sometimes
I beat him, sometimes he’d beat me. But when I beat him
he’d gleefully say, I must be one heck of a teacher
to have my student beat me!
Dad and I went to baseball games, he’d yell and
scream, and quite embarrass me. But what I’d
give to hear my Dad say once more, “You guys are terrible
you can’t play ball.”
Later when Daddy died, I cried, and cried until there were no more tears.
But I could have sworn I heard my beloved father say, “knock if
off, no more tears today.
I’m no longer with you on this earth, that’s true
Be sure, my little girl, I’m always with you.”
