It's traditionally a day
For lovers,
A day for candy and flowers
And teddy bears,
Of romantic dinners
And even more romantic nights;
A day set aside
For the sharing of hearts.
But what about those
Who have no one with whom
To celebrate?
Who have never loved
Or who have loved
And lost?
It can become twenty-four hours
Of angst and loneliness,
An unwelcome reminder
Of our loneliness.
What can we do,
How can we share
In the joy of love
And devotion?
But
First we must ask,
Are we ever truly alone?
No, we're not,
For we always have ourselves,
The person who holds
All that love
To be shared one day
With a special one.
Why not shower ourselves
With loving care?
We can
Buy ourselves a bouquet
Of flowers,
Spend an afternoon
Being pampered
At a spa,
Set a beautiful table
With wine, candles and china
And our favorite fine food.
For the truth is
If we don't love ourselves first,
How can we ever hope to love
At all?
You have started your poem out with the plight of single people who don't have a romantic attachment when Valentine's Day rolls around. I have experienced that many, many times. But I like the way you approach the situation near the end and then give a positive twist at the end that most of us with any sense of ourselves, rely on.
