The Legal Drug

Illegal drugs attract all the attention but what about a legal one.

Politicians when asked, tend to shrug.

"Who really cares? It is a legal drug,

and it’s great for the Treasury’s purse"

Ignoring those caught under its evil curse

Paul used to have the normal dreams

But now fails to live within his means

Cash once saved for that shiny car

Ends up behind some Mo’s bar

Nothing left to take back to the wife

She too shrugs and says "That’s life"

Until he starts to talk with just his fists

And the sobbing woman at last resists

Samantha loves her daddy as he leaves

He’s a different father she perceives

To the returning drunk that she dreads

Forcing her into hiding below family beds

Anita’s just great, tickles everyone pink

Especially after she’s had a little drink

Though I know of one who disagrees

Who before they met had both knees

His legs had met some un-giving steel

Guess who’d been behind the wheel

Eyes all glazed, simply trying to steer

Those nasty traffic cops her only fear

Anita’s back driving her car without a care

Whilst his only wheels belong on his chair.

Two best mates out to enjoy the night

They’ve no intention to get in a fight

Before that was they were full of booze

Now one forever holds different views

No view at all would be specifically right

His friends broken glass stole his sight

Ask the young doctors in the hospital’s E.R.

As they explain, "Yes there will be a scar"

Or their seniors up in the surgical wings

The pleasantries that alcoholism brings

David,

A powerful warning to the insidiousness of alcohol's power. You may have saved many lives today with this excellent write! Well done!

As one who has been sober 22 years (thank you, God), I can testify to what alcohol does. I quit drinking the night I had a blackout and the next morning, safe in my bed, I couldn't remember how I'd gotten home...it's only by the grace of God that I didn't wreck my car, have an accident or cause one, didn't hit or kill anybody AND got home in one piece. To think I drove in that condition still gives me shivers!

Thank you for this much needed post. Well done!

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla. :)

when i gave up illegal drugs, i turned to alchohol and felt that it was a better choice...until i had to quit because it ruled me worse than any 'recreational' drug ever did. i have been sober for 15 years...and i'm still afraid of that legal drug

Excellent points made, they are all valid and need to be made!
No one likes to tackle drinking becasue so many do it, but it
is lethal for so many. Thanks for sharing.

Alcohol is a drug and posts more people to succomb to that old devil bottle than what is known. The typing was light and it was hard for me to read because my vision was impaired after having surgery so much. But I did understand what you said and this is a most welcome poem on the subject.
