Innocence Lost

Written this morning for one of my students...

Dry November leaves blanketed the walkway.

She shuffled through, the way children often do –

the last of the morning stragglers, trying to get

to class before the final bell.

She hesitated for several seconds,

then reluctantly climbed the stairs –

her expression one of defiance.

As I reached out, tears filled her eyes –

thin, wiry arms held me tightly –

her hard exterior now broken.

Glancing up at a gray, pre-winter sky,

I fought back tears of my own –

mouthed an inaudible prayer to an all knowing God

then watched as she entered the building –

tough expression back in place as she readied herself

for the painful games of adolescence.

Innocence must inevitably give way to knowledge but with enough prayer, knowledge gives way to wisdom. Well, one would hope.
Good write, very emotive and I thank you.

So many transitions we go through in life, but none are so emotional as those in our youth. Great capture.

These are the moments that remind us we serve a much greater purpose that to fill minds with knowledge. As teachers, we serve as shepherds to soul. Here's to you and to your contribution to making a change for a lifetime in a young student's life. Teach on!

You picture this moment so well Dawn....to feel and touch upon the adolescence of life is to know it...one can read and feel that emotion when it crosses from one to another...

so many thoughts can appear through each line, exposing the depth of your writing...

nice work Dawn...

Superb capture of the old qadage "stiff upper lip! How often in life do we do that from the time we are children we fight to keep our inner feelings to ourselves. I often wonder how different relationships would be if we hadn't been taught to do this. I agree with Gene!Fantastic poem Dawn!

The blotting up and blotting out of another's pain. How we poets do it! :)) Bless you, Dawn. Your words are like ripples absorbing that little lady's scorching initiation, drawing out the thorn. May she continue to be healed as she continues to be exposed. Alas, no cottonwool at this stage in life. xx

It is so refreshing to know, that you are a ship in the safe harbor, that is what this student told you with that hug.
Just being there is sometimes all that is needed. One day that same student will come to you and say "You know, it was you, that got me through whatever it was that she was going through"...You are a special person Dawn, and you are doing exactly what you are suppose to be doing.
I wish you much peace, love, and light,
