Bulletproof Vest

Written for a student...

She watched him from a corner of the room –

head down, pen in hand,

eyes trying to remain focused on the

paper in front of him –

struggling –

forever struggling.

At sixteen,

he had seen his share of trouble –

drugs,

family difficulties,

problems with the police…

but from their private conversations,

she understood his rebellious spirit…

he sought permanence –

permanence in a world where

nothing endures except change.

For a brief moment, he looked up

and their eyes met.  He gave her that

cocky grin – the one that used to make

her want to smack the hell out of him…

but she smiled in return,

for she was wiser now.

Because when you live in a world

where change has been the only

constant in life,

you more often than not

cling to your armor –

cocky grin no exception.

Nice work Dawn...there are so many teens who have only their personal armour to protect them from the insanity of this world. This cruelty that grabs them as they struggle to find themselves among the pitfalls of growing within an ever changing world...

nice...

Dawn,
So many students, even the very young ones, protect
themselves with this armor. Your expression of compassion
and understanding is wonderful.

You chose the perfect metaphor: armor. Some of us need it more than others. It is hard not to keep reinforcing it to the point where no one can get through. I love the way you paint the picture. Your lines seem to me to have precisely the right degree of spareness, and the way you have varied their length adds to the poem's effectiveness.
Cocky grin is the piece de resistance! Thank you for sharing this

This could be written about some of my children... who lived lives where change was the only constant. Thank you for putting into words what I sometimes feel and I know that they sometimes feel...

Dawn - I know that rebelliousness and the armor, seen differently when a teacher discovers the home life a student endures.
Especially liked the ending stanza:

Because when you live in a world

where change has been the only

constant in life,

you more often than not

cling to your armor –

cocky grin no exception. - David

Dawn,
You make breathing life into a character look easy when it definitely is not. I like how you show the grin for what it really is. Fantastic work.

our emotions weather right or wrong do serve self preservation from an angry cruel world & "Bulletproof Vest" is a fine example of this as seen in his "cocky grin" once creating havoc, now seen with love

I so understand this one, especially to the cocky grin one, for I have used that for many years as one of my own defensive tools. to keep from breaking down in sheer frustration, depression, or just anger I have used it so people think I am stronger that I truly am.
