The Devil You Know

Better the devil you know, they say
Why hope for more? We're only clay
But what if something different waits
Far more important than today

I don't imply you must change all
For sometimes writing's on the wall
Simply keep an open mind
And brighter things may also fall

Your garden is not the only truth
A world around you gives some proof
And then beyond, far more indeed
So what is out there, super-sleuth?

An honest answer's always best
The truth is we don't know the rest
Experience comes to many in time
And each feels slightly cursed and blessed

A mixture of the strangest things
And all succumb, both saints and kings
To mystery which lives through all times
Desire to be lord of the rings

So Frodo, mark these words down well
The future's not mine or yours to tell
Seek on of course, but know for sure
The devil's not better, he'll bring you hell!
