Play By The Rules

 

You don’t bring flowers to a hockey game;
You don’t meet the fullback with kiss and embrace
When boxers get decked, who cries, “It’s a shame!"
Who didn’t expect they’d get punched in the face?

Things aren’t made right with a pacifist’s song.
Take heed and take notice for all that it’s worth.
Let John Lennon know that the Beatles were wrong;
That violence and war is the way of the earth.

Goodness and love’s not our natural state,
Anyone living can make this admission.
As creatures, we’re more prone to evil and hate;
Suff’ring and pain is the human condition.

It starts at the moment sperm meets the egg,
The coin toss; the face-off; the twelve-round campaign.
Life shows no mercy, however you beg;
Our efforts for succor are all made in vain.

No time to mourn when you’re hooked or you’re held.
So, don’t act surprised when you’re slashed or get clipped.
Play through the pain, punching back when compelled;
Not one single round in the match can be skipped.

So, don’t bring flowers to the hockey game;
Those who reason with fighters just look like fools.
Life is a sport and to win is the aim;
It's kickoff, and time now to play by the rules.
