II

Now, Katie'd been recalling her perfections with a smile:

"...My face so fair; My silky hair..."

And hadn't seen that she had been

Alone for quite awhile.

She scanned, somewhat in panic, o'er the fairground's multitude;

When asked if lost, her head she tossed

To those whose mind was to be kind,

And spoke both loud and rude.

"You must be blind if you can't see my perfect form and face.

"My mind's as pure, you can be sure.

"I'm not alone. I'm on my own,

Now, please get off my case!"

"We only sought to help, my dear, if you were in distress.

"You're quite a lass, and..." "You're an ass!

"A girl, you see, as fair as me —

"Is perfect — nothing less."

So, she declined the aid that many there had tried to lend;

To keep her pride, and hide inside

The fear that grew because she knew

The fair was at an end.

And so, she walked for hours till she reached the streets that night.

Without a word, she found a curb,

And laying down upon the ground,

She slept till it was light.

The dawning sun then brought Miss Good to fetch the morning news,

And quite a start it gave her heart,

Though still, she smiled to see the child

Outside there in a snooze.

She gently shook the sleeping girl who woke with angered eyes.

"My, such a sight! Are you all right?"

"Well, who are you?" the girl asked too,

Much to Miss Good's surprise.

"My name's Miss Good, I take in orphaned children to my home.

"I found you here, my handsome dear,

And wondered why you'd come to lie

Here in the street alone."

"I lost my parents in the crowd," yawned Katie, "at the fair.

"I walked all night, and on this site,

My body fell quite tired — Hell!

Why would you even care?!"

The child's sharp words quite shocked Miss Good, who still replied

with ease:

"My house is home to those alone,

And lost one too, not unlike you,

You're welcome, if your please."

"I guess," said Katie, haughtily, "since I am all alone,

And starving so, and feeling low,

I think I'll stay, at least today,

And make your home my own!"

She pushed aside the kind old maid, who stood there by the street,

And moving on, marched through the lawn,

And with a frowned, she turned around

And yelled, "C'mon, let's eat!"

The quote you posted from part one is emphasized here. This girl is currently ugly. She pushed past Beauty on the sidewalk. Hugs~
