My poem "Morbid Thoughts" is about how when you listen to newscasts how it will leave you depressed because of all of the rumors and impending conflicts.
The U.S. seems to have a way to piss Putin off, and I can tell if Putin is desperate enough, he would bite back in a manner no one would see that coming.
The media likes to tick off both sides. I'm tuning out the news for I don't want to spend my time worrying about things that may or may not happen. In most news, you cannot trust its source anyway.
The news reports the latest and most striking of both good and bad news. But people are hungry for bad news even if it makes them depressed. Seeking alternate sources of news is dangerous because it is often contrived and not true. True journalists report the news from verified sources. Science always trumps innuendo with no legitimate argument.
Every bad story requires action by the individuals reading, watching or listening to the story. We must change our behavior to meet new challenges. If we don't, the reports of future horror stories will visit us more and more often (like global warming) until we do something about it.
Where I live we have had several 1000 year events lately. Most notably, hurricane Harvey that dumped an average of 50 inches of rain in two days on Houston and a four-day freeze where we had no power with the power grid we depend upon incapacitated.
I have been purchasing wind power from West Texas since about 2005. It is currently cheaper than coal fired Texas plants. I have estimated putting solar power on my roof that would cover 95% of my electrical use during any time of the grid being down. It is too costly right now for a retired guy like me. But not for someone in their 20s with their first prior owned home. Costly, expensive eye candy renovation should be replaced with energy-efficient and energy producing projects.
Insulation, conservation, proper appliance choice, LED lighting, and food and travel choices, all can contribute to reducing your global warming footprint to nearly 0. We all need to do it now to avoid the consequences later.
