This past week Haiti has been besieged with riots, violence, and looting because of the food prices. Inflation over the past 9 months has caused the price of food to skyrocket exponentially. The people of Haiti are calling on their president, through riots and protests, to help stop the skyrocketing inflation.
This poem is written from the perspective of my dear friends, Guesno and Majorie Mardy, orphanage directors at Foyer de Sion in Haiti.
My heart cries for the land that I love, as all around me I hear the clamor of riots and shouting for food.
A nine pound bag of life giving food, now costing the wage of 18 days; and now my eyes cry too…
The banks are closed and the stores are too. Where to buy the life-giving food? And what do I use to pay for the rice to feed my children that are crying too?
When will the government hear our pleas and help to end the inflation woes that cause my country to cry for food?
Very sad. Problems should be solved at an international level.
Some are poor because others are too rich,
sometimes it's as simple as that.

It's just a matter of time, when this same scenario shifts closer to home...I pray for all those starving right now, that they find a piece of nourishment, somehow...?
Having to know someone actually in the midst of this now, must be so frustrating...we should all find a way to help, but what can I do?
God, have mercy on us all, and especially the people of Haiti and any other country facing this uprise! I commend your eforts in the words you've written..."This too shall pass..."

I thought of you when I saw this on the news. And the food riots...So daft as America has enough food for the whole of the America's...
The lucky ones go over the border and get supplies for a fair price, the trick is to return without being seen by the hungry ones and the bandits.
Hope they get some respite.
What a tragic situation. Sometimes poetry can strengthen the power of an alrady powerful cause. Let's hope the situation does not continue too much longer.
Cryssa,I'm glad they have an advocate like you to bring reognition to their plight. I saw it on the news,and see the misery and frustration they go through.I pray it will be resolved soon!
I just don't even know what to say. Prices used to triple overnight in Peru too. --Terrible on the store owners, and for the marketers too, because they'd thought they had earned ample to restock their wares, but in reality, they then have only enough for a fraction of their former stores. Looting is half of what causes the prices to rise so high... it's just a vicious circle-- devouring the poor in horrible gulps.
I guess I feel most for the orphanages. Do they have their own gardens? I sure hope so! What is Guesno going to do? And how can I help? --Charlie

Heartbreaking write, Cryssa; and if things don't stop going up here, we may end up doing the same thing. Violence and rioting doesn't solve anything! When will people ever learn?? I will say a special prayer for Haiti and her people today and every day!~

We think we have it bad here, and then we see the plight of those in other nations - heartbreaking reality for far too many. Price of food and gas keeps going upupup, paychecks (if there are any) stay the same, actually, decreased due to inflation - no wonder the people riot. Enough's enough. My prayers are with Haiti's people. Excellently penned.
