Stepping into Light

Traveling through tunnels
by feel and not by sight
Claustrophobic inching--
touching pressing walls of dirt

No light reaches open eyes--
My dreams losing their grip,
but stubbornly I dig my heels in
and stretch… for better things.

I’m told that it is hopeless.
I walk in cloistered paths alone…
Darkness is my only friend,
yet it eats my weary soul.

But suddenly the light shines forth--
The dream—reality!
And earthen walls that hid my dreams
are finally crumbling

Leaving me…
standing in open light
no confining walls
to hold my hand in grip of night

Coming out of darkness--
stepping into light…
My safety guards are gone--
Supports of dark rescinded

Wanting nothing to shade my eyes,
I soak in, bask and relish in
the drenching mellow bright
of all surrounding light

My dreams were tiny and petite--
my dreams of baby blue,
and now my dreams are filled with two--
my dreams…  reality.

And joy … the blossom of the light
infuses and engulfs

My heart is full, and running o’er
with blessings from above...

Ooooo-- that bit about gripping the hand of night is gripping. Having dealt with a week full of death, weddings and babies, I get a full sense of this poem. It's a wonder how you can be depressed and excited at the same time, but that's just one of the wonders of life, I guess. Z and R are adorable. --Charlie
