The Soul’s Reverie
The hours are still, we’ve come to know;
when we draw near to assess the soul.
The stillness seems to envelope oneself,
as we take failed dreams down from the shelf.
The shelf of our minds where we had made,
crystal memories gathering time,
while dimming gray as if in the shade.
The hours of life go by so desperately,
grasping an eerie hand toward the hours that flee.
We look upon them passing in real time agonizingly,
while hindsight sweeps them by swiftly, astonishingly, speedily.
While we are there, in the moment ever so present,
we cater to life’s urgencies as full moons turn into crescents.
And each experience precludes the next,
while racing our lives onward, though we sometimes be perplexed.
If we could carefully look back and select,
with fondness and pleasure each memory set,
and play them over, endlessly reliving,
good and fond memories of emotions worth giving,
we could perhaps, save many a young lover,
pining their moments away, recklessly for another.
If we could negate, put away in a box,
Never again to contemplate,
the hurting, painful, angry, and irreverent,
memories sealed within emotional Plexiglas;
never to be shattered, or broken, or erased,
always there, waiting to stare us in the face.
We might be able to categorize, organize, and catalog,
our experiences for self and others;
to prevent them from throwing away,
the few precious moments we daily are given,
as we go through these moments called “livin”.
While we ponder our life’s work, the deposition of our soul,
we carefully assess if we’re meeting each goal.
We moan and groan and agonize over each word, thought, and deed,
especially those we’ve antagonized, without heed, and with great speed.
We wish that we could repeat and reprogram
most of life’s experiences as time marches on.
However, reality brings us back to our senses,
when we realize we could have learned more,
and now must pass what we know on as mentors.
And lovingly, with grace and compassion,
God does the same for us, as our body turns ashen.
He meets us with His love-light shining,
directing our dark paths home.
Back to the beginning, and to the never-ending,
where He looks down upon us
with a loving face, grinning.
He wonders why we worried so,
as we knew all along, just where we would go.
We might have changed direction and form many times throughout our lives,
but He kept the best and innermost part, safe and whole, not letting it depart.
Our soul, never more searching, but found,
the ultimate reward, returning to it’s creator,
who surrounds it with warm, healing light and love from above,
and whispers convincingly, “Job well done, good and faithful servant, welcome home”.
