Sailors and the Night Sky

I find myself on occasion writing some free form prose an poetry on these long dark nights, and often I draw upon my experience not only in the natural world, but from my days at sea. This one is about exploring the world and getting out of our individual 'comfort zone'. I came upon tons of stuff like this on one of my obsolete computers, so I'm getting it all off the hard drives and where you all can appreciate it. Enjoy!!!

Stars, so many stars! The distant lights are not washed out

By the closer lights, not screened out

As the faint points of light travel through the life-giving air

Stars give so much, life, hope, and substance

For centuries men have relied on the stars

They guided ships at sea. They gave direction

Without them, sailors cannot lose sight of land.

But when the star can be seen, the course is limitless.

The thick air of lower altitudes, we find comfort.

We wash ourselves in bright lights of the cities.

The voluptuous, oxygen laden air, we seek it’s life.

We feel we cannot go beyond the reaches of these, like the sailor keeps within view of the shores.
