Two Squirrels

by Betty Jo Tucker — Read all 96 poems by Betty Jo Tucker

Squirrels fascinate me. The short poem below documents my first time seeing two squirrels together

Monday, October 11, 2021

Through my window I saw two squirrels.

They were playing and doing twirls.

Up on its tiny legs one stood

The other watched and understood.

Then it showed off by standing too.

What fun to watch this squirrely two!

But silence broke by our mail truck.

So both squirrels ran. Oh, what bad luck!

Haha! Very cute. I like squirrels, and feed them peanuts in the shells (unsalted), which they are so excited to find! Nice poem, thank-you!

Squirrels are real survivors. Like pigeons, robins and sparrows, they seem to thrive in urban environments as long as there are tall trees for them to hide in. And they are wonderful. I just told my partner that I saw one chasing another last week along our wall at high speed. I'm not sure if it was fun, fight or sex. She complained of seeing only one. But there are at least two in our tree bereft neighborhood.

Lots of theories about them burying nuts. But there is a simple solution… They are planting trees. ;-)

In closing, I must admit to eating many squirrels in my youth. Mom had a way of frying them making them absolutely delicious. Maybe it was the nuts they eat, but they were much more tasty to eat than rabbits I'm sure that's what my grandfather on the family homestead survived on some winters to make it to spring.
