Thirty degrees, there is a deep, eerie moan
A gale blowing from the westward sets the tone
Mountain top strewn across with weathered boulders
Mother of mountains offering up icy cold shoulders
White foam laced with charcoal swirling above
Freezing rain, snow pelting me, here, is no love
For the view, to sense the raw power I came
Mountain adventure, turned into deadly serious game
Will I safely descend or atop, perish
My mind races with fears I wish to banish
Dolly Sods you fickle lady of majesty
Why did you lure me this day to see thee
I'll gladly offer a quick treaty to set me free
I will return in late spring
If we can only work through this thing
To be found in thawing ice, not my desire
Have you trapped me here atop to expire
Visibilty the hand in front of me, not more
Will your summer rains deposit me on a river's shore
Paraly not a possibility, I can see
You are more than the match of me
For mercy I now plead with thee
Set me free from the icy grip of your clouds
I will thank thee over and over aloud
Dolly Sods, Dolly Sods, on the frailty of me
I beg your mercy
Your imagery is outstanding in this poem. I'm not the winter-sport type, but I do like warm weather hiking. One of the hikes I did in NH is called the Basin. Beautiful views the whole way, and it's definitely work getting to the top, especially when you don't do heights. However, at the top is a peaceful lake. Well worth the climb. So if someone doesn't mind the cold, it's probably worth the climb:) hugs,
Sheila
