Salt Air

February bites ungloved hands

open sores bleed

'til the wounds freeze

no protection from twenty degrees

in wind blown salt air

ages human flesh quickly

wool caps don't stop

ice on nostrils, eyebrows and lips

the Chesapeake knows no remorse

ashen sky angry, spitting sleet

but these waters

are the lifeline of my family

fourth generation waterman I am

oyster,crabs and rockfish I catch

sports fishermen play here

in the warm months

those with a hobby of luxuries

from September late 'til March late

fishin for a livin is man's work

restrictions, limits, make the chase

from  early day, 'til late

rough waters don't abate

a northeast gale

sure don't make a man's day

any easier

when on the bay we must play

Coast Guard, Natural Resources folks

patrol, watch us like hawks

better not get caught illegal

fines and boat confiscated

couldn't provide for my family

without my workin tools

industry, homeowners, farmers

ruined the bay quality

nature fights back

a fisherman's stock don't replenish itself

when the waters poisoned

bushel of oysters or crabs

requires lots of time these days

hard work,high operating expenses

it's in my blood

or I'd quit today

just don't like it any other way

even with little pay

I love this place

this bay, these Chesapeake waters

and salt air

So you are a fisherman. That sounds great and sorry you have such a rought time of it these days with the polluting and all. It seems not right for it to be like that. But keeping at your Job and loving it is the best thing you can do. My prayers will go with you for the next season to be great.

Sounds you found your PASSION, that (Fishing) and Writing Jon!
What a wonderful and scary feeling poem, relying on the fish masses for your living survival, and it's generational!
"SALT AIR" is described with such longing and lasting imageries!
Fine inspiration is only miles away...

Jon,
I think with any place we choose to love there will be some negatives. I'm always amazed when people have this type of passion for where they live. There's also a cozy/inviting feel to a way of life steeped with family history. Nicely done!

What a powerful write, Jon. I love that bay, grew up on it, but
never roughed it the way you write about it. I come from a family of watermen, but my Dad gave it up and became a merchant (waterfront store where I was born). Thanks for this, my friend. -gene.

Jon,
This has all the great hallmarks of authenticity, the truth of it shines in every image, detail and line, totally convincing in atmosphere and emotion...and richly said. Bravo!

You have certainly and most effectively recreated and shared the "atmosphere" of the place and your feelings about it and about life within it, Jon. My ancestors (until my grandfather) were fishermen from Brittany, France. Each year, they came to fish for cod at the Grand Banks off Newfoundland. Many of these did not make it back to France. Thank you, Jon. Love and peace,

Regis

Man, I do NOT envy you...I have been on the Chesapeake on what was called a good day and my little 25 footer got tossed about big time...hell, the ocean off my hometown in NJ was less rough...a helluva vivid write here & while I doubt I could do your job, I was cold and wet right there with you...ED

Jon,

i can feel the cold sting of the air you tell of a fisherman's woes
But mostly, you made me homesick. i was born and raised near the Chesapeake Bay. Right at the top in good ol' Maryland.
