A mahogany roll top is my surround

pigeon holes confront my view

empty are a few

some receptacles

for neatly arranged post

others stuffed with receipts

the area beneath them

I have purposely reserved

one space clear enough

for me to transcribe my work upon

then there is that glorious area

I set aside for organized chaos

searching, the method of filing

I employ, as is a man's right

at my wife's insistence

I keep the roll top down

so as not to disclose, "the mess"

what glorious storeage facilities

are the desk's drawers

some prohibit my personal filing style

as they are equipped with

neatly arranged hanging files

the others provide me with

nooks and cubby hole spaces

so that I might stuff them

as my needs dictate

these are my favorite storeage places

where a man has due control

of the utility of his, roll top desk

creativity and imagination

live there in the cracks and aroma

of each hand fitted piece of mahogany

collecting treasures in the dust and love

for it is known

order and arrangement

would surely stifle them

there is poetic justice there

just beneath the enclosed area
