At Half Day

Memories of journeys past drift into conscious thought as I laze away an afternoon of being snowbound.

August is upon the face of cow parsnips

mosquito larvae twitch in still pools

where red clay and the Animas meet

cottonwoods offer escape from rays

boiling sun scorches earth, high noon

the stench of carrion is full on lazy air

black flies swarm about a lifeless rodent

red hooded avian types witness on high

rain has been delinquent for many months

navigating sand at minimum flow has the

Animas choked to a trickle near each bend

coyote lay panting where willing shade plays

their fur hides, holding bulged ribs taut

this land offers a menu fit for shadows

at half day active life is held in abeyance

in sun's absence nature's prey seeks refuge

as predators engage in a game of chance

senses and fleet feet will determine winners

but at half day, cunning takes its daily siesta

Like the coyote, you rest on your laurels snug from the winter reality and dream of a midday in mid-August of your youth--splendid imagery.

Jon,
This sings in the spirit of all those Discovery shows I watch. I like how you mention the circle of life in this piece, because survival is everything in their world. Great poem. Great details.

You have recreated the ambiance of the time and the place so very effectively, Jon. As I read, I can truly "feel" what you are describing. Thank you. Love and peace to you,

Regis

What better way to warm up the inner man than by wrapping yourself in warm thoughts of a lovely hot August day spent contemplating nature's beauty. Thanks for the warm memories on this snowy winter day, Jon Michael.
much peace and love, Carole~

"...this land offers a menu fit for shadows..." you can ask many of those shadows that fought back enemy lines in Nam, where "...cunning (never took) its daily siesta..."

High noon, too lazy to shoot, stetson drawn over his face, na, would remind me of the saying, only....and englishmen ......go out into the noon day sun,... well you know, well projected images Jon, Blessings! Jasmin Horst

The eloquent projection of a snowbound man, Jon, ... what we feel within when we're confined or deprived, what we see of sun and warm life, a tropic heave and richness...your imagination and its vehicle images have a distinct flow and a lasting impact.

John
