Reflections of evening strolls upon the moors.

Darkness Calls

babble is heard about the moors

thistle birds compete for reason

peat agitates dense fog laden with

sulfur’s nauseous yellow emissions

in this place mystery plays openly

suggestion’s full range competes

brave men have cowered, whimpered

this is a proper time, a place to execute

courage building regimens before a call

from darkness summons imagination

in this time primordial fears awaken

every tree conceals demons of the night

each sound harbors ill will we suspect

our ears fill with timpani of chest rhythm

bravery took flight upon screech owl’s wings

reed and heather are on the attack

breeze motions grassy figures to action

do they stalk or do they beckon

fear guides suspicion to the forefront

fight or flight the decision best be right

darkness calls authoritatively for action

panic and bravado wear the same shoes

hedging has no permission in this place

Jon,
I like how you dip into the dark side for this write. The imagery here is haunting throughout. I'm a big fan of Show Time's The Tudors, about King Henry VIII & his many wives. I've found myself fantasizing often about what life was like back then. This poem reminds me of the feeling I get when I drift away with those thoughts. Much enjoyed:)

This last stanza says so much, Jon and I love your perspective and insight in describing the past through a lens of ingenuity and inventiveness.

Jon - Excellent imagery and rhythm create a brooding atmosphere that pulls forth imagination. Several individual lines leap out and linger. Among them:

in this place mystery plays openly

our ears fill with timpani of chest rhythm

do they stalk or do they beckon

panic and bravado wear the same shoes

and the strong final line,

hedging has no permission in this place

Enjoyed. - David

I feel like in the middle of clashing forces, hearts and eyes averted from the beckoning light, only mindful of that powerful call, to strike or not...waiting...waiting... Gosh Jon, you brought me right to the setting and thud, thud, thud! Deeply meaningful and captivating work. Excellent, my friend, as usual. Peace and love in Christ.

Be well,
Sheri

I, too, live right on the edge of open moorland that reaches right down to the sea, so I ADORE this, spooky or not, Jon! :)) Powerful evocation here and I love the interweaving of the natural world with the mystical, sinister and surreal. Yes, moors-landscapes can be intimidating, especially as light diminishes. Some beautiful, precise descriptions, but my favourites are:

reed and heather are on the attack
breeze motions grassy figures to action
do they stalk or do they beckon
fear guides suspicion to the forefront

... and the most wonderful, neat and unique:

panic and bravado wear the same shoes

Moors are a great place to indulge the surreal but are often not for the faint-hearted! Lovely work here, xx

There is something dark and mysterious up in the moors.
It is as if they holds secrets and one does sense the primal and there permanence.

The metaphors are just as eery. The tree's owl, emotions.

"panic and bravado wear the same shoes" <---- brilliance.

This conjures up a world where all is in motion fighting against whatever is the nearest thing, almost chaotic, it seems we are heading towards this scenario and it is frightening! Superb writing Jon! ...ET

"...panic and bravado wear the same shoes..."

So love this line. This is a wonderful poem replete with opportunity to determine one's own perspective - "do they stalk or do they beckon..."

I agree with John that this is subtle and carefully thought-through. This piece draws me toward my own inclination that things aren't always as we suspect. Our stirrings are less about external conditions, more about internal ones. This seems to be about the struggle to maintain equillibrium by adapting and adjusting our lense.

Terrific writing.

For me, Jon, this is a subtle and thought-through call to arms, a proclamation to resist and take on the forces that threaten and intimidate; nonetheless, your extended metaphor setting is filled with courage and realisation. For me, too, some outstanding phrasing and imagery here: 'thistle birds compete for reason' and 'our ears fill with timpani of chest rhythm' are just two examples, and the final 'hedging has no permission in this place' is the ultimate determination.

John

Shadows of the haunted soul alone caught up in fear of the unknown, you certainly did a masterful job, I can perceive the acrid sulphur in my nostrils and the guy with tail, dancing the hornpipe.
