When my brother Gary was murdered, it took many poems to let the pain out. This one was shortly after the terrible loss. When I read it, I can still feel the anguish.

Getting Through This Life!

This year has been so tragic, this year has been so hard.
The pain and anguish we all feel, left this year so marred.
We lost a loved one through a tragic death & left us feeling so depressed,
There wasn't any cheerfulness, & gone was the joy and jest.

The emptiness is not endurable.
The thought of never seeing him, is totally incurable.
People said that time would alleviate, the sadness we feel.
But as the days and time go by, the pain still seems so real.

The feelings we have are many, like anger, mistrust and fear.
We can't believe what happened, and it keeps the pain so near.

Now I'm sure as days and weeks go by, we will some how adjust.
But it seems so senseless in the way he died, to every one of us.
We had to deal with many things that were way beyond our learning.
And without him here to guide us, we feel helpless and disconcerting.

If only death was not a lasting thing, then my heart could almost sing.
For I could go and talk to him, and he would make things right again.
We have to face tomorrow without him being there.
We have to face this loneliness, with help through our daily prayer.

God give us the strength to carry on through this life.
Make us someday get over the damage done to us that night.
Let us know that someday, we'll meet him beyond that shore.
And we'll get through this life of stress, when we all meet once more.

Written for my brother Gary, who was murdered in 1990
and still we’re trying to get through losing him.

It's so close to home when it's someone that near! Sad, and the only comfort sometimes is being thankful for the short time you shared together here. Then there is the life after this one... it holds the cure and the balm.
